Role summary 

In this internship, you’ll support the Design Team by researching, mapping, and improving cross‑functional business processes that power Compass Group’s hospitality experiences. You’ll partner with restaurant guests, culinary managers, and internal support teams to uncover friction points, run root‑cause analyses, and shape testable solutions that elevate operator efficiency and guest satisfaction. Success looks like clear process maps, prioritized recommendations, and a well‑socialized readout that sparks action.

  • Simplify and optimize the complexity of our business—technology, processes, and user experiences—to reduce friction and increase value for operators and guests.

What you’ll do (Responsibilities) 

  • Research 

    • Conduct conversational interviews with restaurant guests, culinary managers, internal support teams and Operations Leadership to uncover friction points and opportunities across end‑to‑end processes. 

    • Perform in‑person, on‑site audits at Compass Group accounts; shadow or execute process steps to map user journeys and empathize with operators and guests to understand the problem – opportunity space. 

  • Analysis 

    • Create process maps and supporting documentation that enumerate steps, pain points, gaps, and improvement opportunities. 

    • Run root‑cause analyses to isolate drivers of observed issues. 

    • Generate and compare solution hypotheses to mitigate gaps and improve outcomes. 

  • Project management 

    • Translate raw business problems into clear scope statements, success criteria, and measurable objectives. 

    • Develop test/learning plans that define research/analysis tasks, timelines, and stakeholders to ensure alignment with scope and core need. 

  • Refinement & storytelling 

    • Synthesize insights and recommendations; build concise readouts and present findings to stakeholders and leadership to drive decisions and next steps.

Ideal qualifications

  • Sophomore or Junior enrolled in a 4‑year degree program in Process Engineering or an alternative engineering or business degree. 
  • Existing work experience and/or keenness to work in the service industry (restaurants, cafes, hotels, hospitals, university dining, etc.). 

  • Technical skills including Microsoft Office Suite (PowerPoint, Word, and Excel), as well as Microsoft Visio or other process‑mapping software such as Miro or Figma.

  • Ownership: You’ll run scoped projects with coaching and regular feedback. 

  • Collaboration: Join standups, reviews, and cross‑team demos; work with stakeholders across Design, Operations, and Product. 

  • Rhythm: Hybrid in Charlotte, NC Compass Digital office with periodic on‑site research and account visits as project needs dictate. 

  • Mentorship: 1:1 mentoring and supervision with regular check-ins. 

  • Leadership access: Department lead support to oversee integration and unblock decisions. 

  • Onboarding support: Administrative support to assist with onboarding and logistics. 

  • Training & immersion: Structured trainings and immersion meetings to provide context and accelerate ramp-up.
