Job Summary


The Catering Captain is responsible for the supervision and support in planning catering events of varying sizes and levels in both central and satellite locations for the Field Museum and Art Institute. This is a hybrid role that will require this position to report to both locations based on event schedule. The catering captain must ensure that all catering brand standards and initiatives are consistently achieved at both properties. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:  

  • Set up catering and event service according to client/customer requests and banquet event order. 
  • Help Catering Manager with delegating tasks to catering servers in the Catering Department.  
  • Interacts with customers and resolves complaints in a service-oriented manner. 
  • Demonstrates complete understanding of menu items. 
  • Replenish Food and Beverage products during events. 
  • Instructs staff on work expectations for catered functions. 
  • Helps staff set up rooms to desired specifications. 
  • Pick up and clean up food and beverage deliveries after service. 
  • Returns food, beverages, serving equipment and utensils to catering storage. 
  • Maintain appearance and cleanliness of food service areas during events. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent; some college preferred. 
  • Previous catering experience required. 
  • Minimum of two years operational experience in a hotel/banquet setting preferred.   
  • Previous customer service experience preferred. 
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to make quick and accurate decisions. 
  • Demonstrate the ability to work independently with limited supervision. 
  • Must be available to work event-based hours. 
  • Ability to lift and transport items weighing 10-30 pounds, occasionally up to 50 pounds. 
  • Must have sufficient mobility to perform production tasks, including constant reaching, bending, stooping, wiping, pushing, and pulling for extended periods. 
  • All applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
