Job Summary
Qualified individual, who lays out, fabricates, assembles, installs, and maintains piping and piping systems, and equipment for medical gas and vacuum systems on the basis of knowledge of system operation, study of building plans or working drawings covered by the ASSE 6010 Standard. The installer must be certified by an approved training agency.
Typical Duties:
As a Plumber;
Study blueprints, sketches, or building plans for information pertaining to type of material and piping required and dimensions of plumbing system to be installed. Select type and size of pipe and related materials according to job plans and specifications. Inspect work sites to determine presence of obstructions. Plan sequence of installation to avoid obstructions and activities of other construction workers. Cut pipe using hacksaw, pipe cutters, hammer and chisel, cutting torch, and pipe cutting machine. Thread pipe using threading machine. Assemble and install a variety of metal and non-metal pipe and pipe fittings, including those made of brass, copper, lead, glass, and plastic. Fit and install prefabricated sinks, faucets, showers, etc. Join piping by means of threaded, caulked, wiped, soldered, brazed, or fused joints. Secure pipes to structure with clamps, brackets, and hangers using hand tools. Test system for leaks by increasing pressure in pipes and observing gauges attached to pipes for indication of leaks. Follow directions, plans, and blueprints. Work within precise limits or standards of accuracy. Make decisions based on measurable criteria. Visualize objects in three dimensions from plans and drawings. Detect, recognize and respond to dangerous conditions or situations.
As a Med Gas Installer;
Selects type and size of pipe and related materials according to job specifications for the installation into these life safety systems. The installer is required to have a general knowledge of product installation along with the applicable laws, codes, rules, listing agencies, and regulations from the federal, state, and local levels pertaining to medical gas and vacuum systems. In addition a working knowledge of product performance, system and component testing, documenting and recording, and medical terminology of medical gas systems is required. Certified Medical Gas Installers shall maintain their certifications by showing proof of brazing performance every 6 months. Installers will be proficient in the use of oxygen and acetylene torches with rosebud tips while purging the system with nitrogen.
Requirements: Must be capable of exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force frequently, or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.; must be able to apply and interpret principles of rational systems to solve practical problems; the basic competencies in algebra, geometry and shop mathematics; must be able to read safety rules, instructions in the use of maintenance tools and equipment and methods and procedures found within mechanical drawings and layout work. Work within precise standards of accuracy; Rate information using standards which can be measured or checked; Compare and see differences in the size, shape, and form of lines, figures, and objects; Look at flat drawings or pictures and understand how they would look as solid objects; and follow oral and written directions, plans, and blueprints. Physically, workers must be able to: See well (either naturally or with correction); Coordinate the movements eyes, hands and fingers; Use hands, arms, and fingers fully; Climb and maintain balance on ladders and scaffolding; Stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, or work at heights as required and lift and carry objects weighing up to 100 pounds and occasionally more. Completion of a certified training program is required.
TX State Plumbing License and Medical Gas Certification preferred.
