Job Summary
The Sanitarian ensures that all food preparation, handling, storage, and service within the catering department complies with local health codes, food safety regulations, and internal quality standards. This role is vital in maintaining a clean, safe, and hygienic environment across all catering operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Monitor and enforce compliance with local, state, and federal food safety and sanitation regulations (e.g., FDA Food Code, HACCP, OSHA).

Conduct regular inspections of catering kitchens, preparation areas, storage, and service equipment for cleanliness and proper sanitation practices.

Train catering staff on food safety protocols, personal hygiene standards, proper food handling, and cleaning procedures.

Develop and maintain sanitation standard operating procedures (SSOPs) tailored to catering operations.

Oversee proper food storage, temperature logs, waste management, and pest control measures.

Investigate and report food safety incidents, non-compliance, or contamination risks; recommend corrective actions.

Maintain accurate records of inspections, audits, and staff training.

Collaborate with kitchen and operations teams to promote a culture of food safety and continuous improvement.

Ensure that all cleaning agents and chemicals are properly labeled, stored, and used safely.
Qualifications:
-
Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health, Food Science, Public Health, or related field (preferred).

Certification in food safety or sanitation (e.g., ServSafe, CP-FS, HACCP certification).

2+ years of experience in a similar role, preferably in a catering or high-volume foodservice environment.

Strong knowledge of food safety laws, regulations, and best practices.

Excellent communication, training, and organizational skills.

Detail-oriented with strong observational and documentation abilities.

Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends or events, as needed
Work Environment

Primarily based in kitchen and food preparation areas.

Requires wearing of PPE (e.g., gloves, hairnet, lab coat) during inspections.

May involve some travel between catering sites or venues.
