Job Summary

As a Sous Chef in a healthcare food service environment, you play a key role in supporting the overall success of the culinary program and daily kitchen operations. This position assists in all aspects of menu planning, food procurement, inventory management, and food production. You are responsible for ensuring all culinary practices align with patient‑centered care standards, facility policies, Health Department regulations, and company expectations for food quality, safety, freshness, and presentation.

The Sous Chef also supports and leads back‑of‑house team members, providing training, coaching, and daily direction to ensure safe, nutritious, and appealing meals are consistently prepared to meet the needs of patients, staff, and visitors.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists in coordinating and participating in the preparation and cooking of meals for patients, staff, and visitors, following therapeutic diet guidelines and healthcare nutrition standards.
  • Supports menu planning and development to meet healthcare dietary requirements and operational goals.
  • Implements new culinary programs and initiatives in collaboration with the culinary and nutrition teams.
  • Helps manage food and supply cost controls, ensuring budget compliance and minimizing waste.
  • Maintains adherence to sanitation, infection control, and food safety regulations specific to healthcare settings.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to support kitchen operations and patient satisfaction.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of culinary experience, including at least 1 year in a supervisory or management role.
  • Experience in healthcare food service is highly preferred; related experience in restaurants, hospitality, corporate dining, education, or military settings is also valued.
  • Strong knowledge of food production, healthcare dietary compliance, sanitation standards, safety practices, food cost management, and high‑volume operations.
  • Ability to prepare and distribute production sheets and ensure accurate execution by staff.
  • Demonstrated leadership, communication, training, and team‑building skills.
  • ServSafe or local Department of Health certification preferred.
  • Proficiency with computers and MS Office (including Excel).
  • Associate degree in Culinary Arts preferred.
