Job Summary

Food Expeditor Duties & Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with the kitchen staff to prioritize and dispatch orders efficiently
  • Ensure accurate and timely delivery of dishes to tables
  • Collaborate closely with waitstaff to communicate special requests or modifications to kitchen staff
  • Assist in the final preparation of dishes, including garnishing and quality checks
  • Maintain a positive and collaborative working environment with kitchen and serving staff
  • Address any discrepancies or issues with orders promptly to enhance guest satisfaction
  • Uphold the restaurant’s standards for food quality and presentation
  • Facilitate communication between kitchen and waitstaff to streamline order fulfillment

A Food Expeditor's responsibilities go beyond simply delivering dishes from the kitchen to the dining area. 

This position is vital in ensuring service is timely, food is presented correctly, and the kitchen operates with precision.

  • Monitor dish accuracy – Ensure correct prep, modifications, and plating.
  • Keep workstation clean – Maintain an organized pass to support smooth service.
  • Support training – Help onboard staff and model efficient, collaborative workflow.

Food Expeditor Key Skills and Qualifications

To thrive as a Food Expeditor, certain skills and traits are essential for ensuring smooth and efficient kitchen operations. 

This role bridges the gap between the kitchen and dining areas, requiring a unique blend of interpersonal abilities and organizational expertise.

  • Exceptional communication skills – Clearly relay orders and changes between kitchen and front-of-house to prevent delays or mistakes.
  • Strong organizational abilities – Keep track of multiple orders to ensure timely and accurate service flow.
  • Attention to detail – Inspect every dish for accuracy, presentation, and special requests before it leaves the kitchen.
  • Physical stamina and energy – Remain alert and active throughout long, high-pressure shifts.
  • Quick problem-solving – Address issues on the spot to maintain smooth and efficient service.

Food Expeditor Experience Requirements & Skills

  • Minimum of two years of experience in a restaurant or hospitality setting
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Familiarity with order management systems and kitchen operations
  • Effective problem-solving skills to immediately address issues
  • Ability to work collaboratively and establish rapport with kitchen and serving staff
  • Adaptability to a fast-paced and dynamic restaurant environment
