Location: Retail Dining at The George Washington University

Salary:  $70,000 - $80,000

Job Summary

Are you a hands-on foodservice leader who thrives in a fast-paced, customer-focused retail environment? Chartwells Higher Education is seeking an experienced Retail Dining Manager to support vibrant dining operations at The George Washington University, located in the heart of Washington, DC.

Position Summary

As the Retail Dining Manager, you will be responsible for the successful operation of assigned retail and cafeteria dining locations within Food & Nutrition Services. Reporting to the General Manager, you will oversee daily operations, financial performance, merchandising, and team development—ensuring an outstanding experience for students, faculty, staff, and campus guests.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, coordinate, and supervise daily retail and cafeteria operations, including special events and peak service periods
  • Lead the hiring, onboarding, scheduling, training, and performance management of hourly team members
  • Maintain strong cash control practices, payroll accuracy, and compliance with corporate financial standards
  • Ensure excellent customer satisfaction through safe, efficient, and professional use of resources
  • Train and coach associates on customer service excellence, portion control, cashiering, and food safety standards
  • Direct staff to deliver service in compliance with Chartwells’ corporate policies, brand standards, and presentation guidelines
  • Complete required daily, weekly, and monthly operational and financial reports accurately and on time
  • Foster positive relationships through clear communication with team members and campus partners
  • Implement and enforce cash-handling standards to safeguard company assets and prevent loss

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Food Services Management, Hospitality, or a related field
    OR Associate’s degree plus three (3) years of directly related experience
  • 1–3 years of retail or contract foodservice management experience (higher education preferred)
  • Solid understanding of current food and retail dining trends with a focus on quality, sanitation, and presentation
  • Experience managing cash-based retail operations and point-of-sale systems
  • P&L responsibility and contract-managed foodservice experience strongly preferred
  • Retail marketing or promotional experience is highly desirable
  • Proven leadership, coaching, and team-development skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication abilities
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with management, clients, and front-line associates
  • Working knowledge of budgeting, financial reporting, and cost controls
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, email, and internet-based systems
