Job Summary

Job Title: Sous Chef
Location: National Geographic Museum, Washington, DC

 

Detailed Responsibilities:
The Sous Chef will support the Executive Chef in overseeing daily kitchen operations and ensuring the delivery of high-quality culinary experiences. This role will assist in menu execution, supervise kitchen staff, and maintain consistency in food preparation and presentation. The Sous Chef will also ensure compliance with food safety and sanitation standards while contributing to efficient kitchen workflows and cost controls. This position plays a key role in training team members, managing inventory, and maintaining a clean, organized kitchen environment.

 

Description:

  • Support the Executive Chef in overseeing daily kitchen operations and service execution
  • Supervise and coordinate culinary team members during prep, service, and breakdown
  • Ensure all food is prepared and presented according to established recipes and quality standards
  • Assist in menu development, including seasonal offerings and special event menus
  • Maintain strict adherence to food safety, sanitation, and health regulations
  • Monitor portion control, waste, and food costs to support financial goals
  • Train, mentor, and develop kitchen staff to ensure consistent performance
  • Collaborate with front-of-house and leadership teams to deliver a seamless guest experience

 

Requirements:

  • 2–5+ years of experience in a high-volume kitchen, preferably in a supervisory role
  • Culinary degree or equivalent professional training preferred
  • Strong knowledge of food safety and sanitation standards (ServSafe certification preferred)
  • Experience with inventory management, ordering, and cost control
  • Proficiency in various cooking techniques and kitchen equipment
  • Ability to supervise, train, and direct kitchen staff
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 50 lbs
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office and kitchen management systems is a plus
